Rudhran: Lawrence sans a bald head and ghosts!
Rudhran, directed by Kathiresan, is Raghava Lawrence’s theatrical outing after four years. You adjust with what you can’t change- such is the case with Raghava Lawrence; you just get accustomed to his kind of films.
Raghava Lawrence has earned an energetic screen presence to himself. The man could handle humour and emotion with ease. Priya Bhavani Shankar is a pleasing presence in the film. Poornima Bhagyaraj as Lawrence’s mother is very convincing in her part. Sarath Kumar doesn’t make any impact as the villain, even with the cruel crimes that are pinned on him.
G.V. Prakash Kumar has done a fantastic job with “Pagai Mudi”. The two remix songs “Jorthale” and “Paadatha Paattellaam” are well choreographed. Sam CS has forayed into the Thaman template; no matter what happens, sound just keeps coming from every woofer. The fight choreography by Stun Shiva is so bad, period.
Let them tell what they will, but Rudhran seems to be helmed by Raghava Lawrence himself. There is the mother sentiment, siva sentiment, and aghori climax! Credited to be written by Thirumaaran, the screenplay makes no effort to deviate from what Lawrence does usually.
Overall, Rudhran is the third installment of the “Siva-series” by Lawrence that started with Motta Shiva Ketta Shiva, followed by Shivalinga. Rudhran is certainly the most redeeming of the lot but that alone wouldn’t suffice for 2023. This is a “Kanchana” sans ghosts and the bald head Lawrence!
