Review
Pathaan is the fourth installment of the YRF SPY Universe. Expected to be the start of crossovers and many more surprises, Pathaan was supposed to be more refined!
Shah Rukh Khan has still got it. Red chillies have put their best men to do the skin tightening. But still, that comes off as a major turn-off to the actor’s charisma. Deepika Padukone shares good chemistry with both Shah Rukh and John; their past collaborations might have helped. John Abraham fits the role of a rogue agent perfectly. The cameo is whistle worthy but it sticks out like a sore thumb.
The film tries a desi Mission Impossible spin on the YRF Spy Universe. This works largely because of the leads. Style was natural for the leads in War. But when Siddharth Anand tries to amplify unwarranted exuberance in Pathaan, the leads seem little apologetic. The difference between WAR and Bang Bang was the emotional connectivity in the former. The lack of the same makes Pathaan a distant cousin to Bang Bang. This is one of the rare films that has more screen time for dupes than the actors. The CGI done to mask the faces of dupes is substandard and kills the action pieces in its entirety.
“Beshram Rang” was good to hear, if you could withstand the “wanna be hot” picturisation. With the background score, things have slightly gone wrong. The visuals are standard and the locations are repetitive.
Overall, Pathaan is SRK’s return to screen and we love it. But the film doesn’t grow beyond it. The film runs across countries, action set pieces, songs and bad CGI. These all accumulate into one giant Bollywood action masala, but with little to root for.
