Twitter has recently implemented a change that prevents people without accounts from browsing tweets on its web platform. In order to view tweets, individuals must first create an account.
According to Elon Musk, who spoke on the matter on Saturday, the decision to take such drastic action was necessary because of the “extreme levels of data scraping” that were taking place.
However, there is a possibility that this decision could have unintended consequences. If tweets are no longer publicly accessible, it could result in search engine algorithms ranking Twitter’s content lower.
Musk stated that the decision to block browsing access for non-account holders was a temporary emergency measure. He explained that the high levels of data scraping were negatively impacting the service for regular users.
Musk claimed that almost every company involved in AI, from small startups to large corporations, was scraping vast amounts of data from Twitter.
Musk expressed frustration at having to bring large numbers of servers online on an emergency basis just to accommodate the data demands of AI startups with high valuations.
According to reports, there is a possibility that this latest change by Twitter could backfire, as has been the case with some of their recent changes. While it is understandable that Twitter wants to protect its data from being taken for free, this move could reduce the platform’s reach and exposure from external links and embeds. It also raises some privacy concerns. A user with the handle @TitterDaily posted that they hope a better solution can be found in the long term.
Through this decision to block browsing access for non-account holders, Musk’s aim is to stop AI tools from being able to search Twitter.
